The definitive injury results from the PAFIX project have been published

The definitive injury results from the PAFIX study have been published online in the latest edition of Injury Prevention.  Overall, during the study there were  773 game injuries recorded. The lower limb was the most frequently injured and accounted for 50% of all injuries. More specifically, 17% of lower limb injuries were to the upper leg, 12% to the knee, 8% to the lower leg and 13% to the ankle/foot/toes.

The players who participated in the training program had a 22% reduction in lower limb injury rates and a 50% reduction in knee injury rates compared to players in the control group of the study. Below is a link to the journal article.

Recent PAFIX publication – Concussion in community Australian football

The most recent study from the PAFIX project authored by Dr. Lauren Fortington, Dr. Dara Twomey and Professor Caroline Finch was published in latest issue of Injury Epidemiology. This paper used data collected during the PAFIX project and is focused specifically on concussion, with the aim to improve understanding of the injury within a community Australian football setting.

Through comprehensive injury surveillance during the PAFIX project a detailed description of the circumstances in which each concussion occurred is provided within the paper. These descriptions provide insight into situations within game-play that may lead to head injury that will be useful for their prevention and management.

New PAFIX publication!

A new paper authored by the PAFIX research team and led by Dr. Dara Twomey has been published in the Journal of Applied Case Studies in Sport and Exercise. The aim of the paper was to highlight the real world challenges faced by the PAFIX team while implementing an injury prevention exercise program in community sport. This paper provides a detailed description of challenges faced while implementing the program in a community sports setting, and how the research staff adapted the program to overcome these barriers. This paper highlights the importance of involving all key parties (researchers, coaches, players, club management, equipment manufactures) to help design effective programs and overcome potential barriers to successful implementation. This publication will provide valuable information to coaches and sports clubs who are interested in implementing an injury prevention program, and sports injury prevention researchers who want their programs to have a real world impact.
